Bastrop is currently the largest city in Morehouse Parish, with over 11,000 residents. The city was first founded by the Baron de Bastrop, who fled to the area to avoid prosecution. While he was able to obtain a land grant, he was unable to fulfill his promise of moving 450 families to the area, thus losing the grant. Even after Baron de Bastrop left, the city continued to develop without the land grant. By 1857, the city incorporated and became a major center for commercial and industrial services. While the rail line did not connect to the city, it has continued to make improvements throughout the years and is truly a wonderful place to live and raise a family.

As part of the Main Street Program, the city has been able to improve public transit in the historical downtown area, as well as renovate many of the buildings. There are a number of shops and restaurants for you to browse around, as well as shaded areas to sit and enjoy the afternoon.

If you are looking for an adventure the Chemin-A-Haut State Park has plenty of activities to keep you more than busy. With a pool for swimming, walking trails and canoe rentals, you can enjoy nature in a variety of ways here. Plus, there are cabin rentals and boat launches, so making a weekend out of your visit here is always a great option.

If you would prefer to enjoy a low-key afternoon outing, you can simply head out to one of the many city parks located in Bastrop. There are six parks in the city for you to choose from, and each offers something a little different. Most have athletic fields, picnic areas and playgrounds for you to use. If you are looking to beat the heat and go for a swim, you will have to head over to East Madison Park, which is located right off of East Jefferson Street.

Not looking to explore the great outdoors? Maybe a history lesson over at the Snyder Museum and Creative Arts Center is a better choice for you then. At the museum, there are three buildings to tour, which include the Garden Room, the Carriage House and the original 1929 brick home of Charles and Esther Snyder. Within the Carriage House, you can explore antique farm equipment, a horse drawn hearse and a country store. Some of the other exhibits include relics from the Morehouse Parish Indians, historic photographs, antique clothing and household items from everyday life during that time. If you don’t know much about Bastrop, by the time you leave here you will have a new found understanding of how the city has developed over the years.

When you are ready to grab lunch or dinner, just head downtown or to one of the local favorites for a delicious meal. In the mood for a family style meal? You can’t go wrong at Granny’s Family Restaurant, which is right down the road from our store on East Madison Avenue. You are sure to enjoy the delicious country cooking that is served up here. Plus, it’s rated the number one restaurant in Bastrop by Trip Advisor, so be sure to bring an appetite.
