Cheap Ideas to Show Your Kindness on World Kindness Day (November 13th)

October 19, 2018 | By Emma Frost

With all the negativity in the news today and stress levels reaching holiday highs, it can be hard to get into the spirit this time of year. But just because it takes a little work doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing!

Spread the Love for Less This World Kindness Day

World Kindness Day is November 13th and (as the name suggests) it’s the perfect opportunity to make the world a better place with random acts of kindness. And the best part is, you don’t need Louisiana payday loans to finance your philanthropy. Here are just a few ways to celebrate that are kind to others and your wallet this World Kindness Day.

Be Positive

The best way to start any new endeavor is to be positive, but that can be easier said than done. Here are just a few ways you can give your efforts a place to start:

  • Be patient and encouraging: others will appreciate your positivity.
  • Smiling is contagious: feel a scowl coming on? Just smile and watch as others smile right back!
  • Don’t let kind words go unsaid: compliment someone, or relay a compliment you overheard.

There are tons of ways you can use a kind word to make someone’s day, whether you’re letting someone’s boss know they did a great job, or even telling your own boss that his or her hard work doesn’t go unnoticed!

Empathy is the name of the game. Cut someone some slack today and remind yourself that everyone is fighting their own struggles. A smile, a hug, or a pat on the back could make all the difference. And if you hear a negative voice in your head, remember to cut yourself some slack, too — you deserve kindness just as much.

There are plenty of ways to use technology to jumpstart your efforts this World Kindness Day. Using the internet to reach out to others can help you touch lives around the world over, and it doesn’t even have to cost a thing!

  • If you’re thinking about posting an angry comment, don’t. There’s enough negativity online.
  • Know someone who’s always posting status updates? A few nice words could make their day.
  • Compliment someone you haven’t talked to in a while on Facebook or Twitter.

Worried you’re “bothering” your friends or family with a kind word or two? Don’t be! They probably feel the same way, but everyone likes being reminded that they’re loved. Something as simple as texting someone just to say good morning or make sure they got home safely doesn’t cost you anything but a moment of your time.

Being kind online is great, but the best part of being kind in person is that rewarding feeling you get when you see someone smile and know it’s all because of you. Here are some easy ways to make others feel special in real life:

  • Hang out with someone new to town: this will help them get comfortable and make new friends.
  • Try talking to the shy person who's sitting alone: they may be shy, but they’ll probably appreciate feeling included.
  • Put your phone away: practice active listening when someone’s talking, and make sure they feel heard.
  • Don't interrupt: few people master this, but everyone will appreciate it.

Show Your Appreciation

If you’re reading this, chances are there are wonderful people in your life who have helped shape you into the caring and generous person you are today. Check out these simple ways to pay it forward and celebrate the unsung heroes in our lives this World Kindness Day:

  • If you have siblings (or anyone just as close) tell them just how much you care. They’re the best friends you’ll ever have.
  • If you’re lucky enough to still have them in your life, call your mom and dad, or even your grandparents. They miss you, and hearing from you will make their day.
  • Reach out to a teacher who made a difference in your life. Knowing they’ve touched someone’s life could make a big difference in theirs as well!

Showing others your appreciation can be as rewarding for you as it is for them! Think of three things you’re grateful for every night before bed. Taking stock of all the good things in your life can help you stay mindful of the things you might otherwise take for granted.

Put Others First

Making the world a better place for everyone means leading by example, and that means the change starts with you. Putting others first can also be surprisingly addictive once you get started!

  • Let another driver take the closer space. A few extra steps won’t hurt.
  • Let the person with one or two items go ahead of you at the supermarket checkout.
  • Let someone into your lane on your way home – they're probably in a rush to get home just like you.

Help Those in Need

Be a beacon of kindness and goodwill this World Kindness Day and think about those who need it most. Stop and talk to a homeless person and ask them how you can help. Something as simple as an old blanket or your leftovers from dinner could make all the difference. Sixty percent of all nursing home residents never get a visit – spend some time reading to them or playing board games.

Be an ambassador of good in your community by joining a Big Brothers Big Sisters program near you. And if you’re an animal lover, be kind to a furry four-legged friend by adopting a rescue from your local shelter. This one might come with a nominal fee, but you get to give this pet a second chance at a forever home, and that’s a gift that gives back with every cuddle!

Kindness Makes the World Go Round

Our planet is the only world we’ve got (so far) so being good to it isn’t just good for the Earth, but for all the life on it, too. If you’ve focused mostly on individuals to show your kindness to, why not show Mother Earth a little love this World Kindness Day?

  • Plant a tree.
  • Carpool to reduce your carbon footprint.
  • Host a clean-up party on the beach or at a local park.

Being kind can be its own reward, especially when you get other people in on the fun! Share your efforts on social media, get your friends involved and engaged, and don’t forget to tag it with #WordKindnessDay to be part of the movement. Use these ideas to get your kind on this World Kindness Day, and be the change you want to see in the world!
